Justin C. Chavez, M.D.
Board Certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Fellowship-trained in Interventional Pain Management
Dr. Justin Chavez typifies SpineAustin’s comprehensive care approach that distinguishes the practice from other spine care centers.
In treating individuals with pain syndromes, Dr. Chavez focuses on musculoskeletal stabilization achieved through physical therapy, behavioral modification, patient education and, when appropriate, injection therapy.
A specialist in non-surgical treatment for neck and back pain, Dr. Chavez utilizes injection therapy and other interventional procedures directed at the source of pain to treat numerous conditions that do not require surgical attention.
“I enjoy practicing physical medicine and rehabilitation because this specialty incorporates the whole person and encompasses evaluation, diagnosis and treatment,” he said. “I’m guided by a strong commitment to a holistic approach when caring for patients.”
A native Austinite, Dr. Chavez completed his undergraduate work at The University of Texas at Austin. He earned his medical degree at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where he also completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency. Dr. Chavez performed over 600 electrodiagnostic studies under the supervision of world renowned expert Dr. Dan Dumitru.
Following the completion of his residency, he fulfilled his post doctorate training with a fellowship in Interventional Pain Management at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was trained in the latest pain intervention techniques and procedures during his fellowship, including epidural injections, facet injections, radiofrequency ablations, kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty and nerve blocks.
His medical and research interests include interventional pain management, cancer pain management, electrodiagnostic medicine and cement vertebral augmentation.

Dr. Chavez joined SpineAustin in July 2010 after being in private practice in Sugarland, Texas.
Although he still lives in Houston where his wife practices at Texas Children’s Hospital, Dr. Chavez commutes to Austin each week to work at SpineAustin. “I was considering other opportunities, but once I learned about SpineAustin and its group of physicians, I immediately jumped at the chance to work with this group.” Dr. Chavez continued, “I know I’ll stay at the top of my game by practicing alongside the top spine physicians in the country.”
Dr. Chavez and his wife, who’s a pediatric hematologist/oncologist, enjoy traveling. He’s also a fitness enthusiast.
Because of SpineAustin’s conservative care commitment, over 85 percent of its patients are effectively treated non-surgically.
