The spine’s discs function as a shock absorber between the spine’s bony vertebrae. When a disc in the neck herniates, the jelly center of the disc breaks through the disc walls and puts pressure on nearby nerves. This cervical disc herniation can be felt as arm, scapula and/or shoulder pain. Discectomy is one surgical option to treat herniated discs in the neck.
