Epidural Steroid Injections
Epidural steroid injections are a common type of injection therapy that provides relief from certain types of back and neck pain.
Used to treat spinal stenosis, disc herniation and degenerative disc disease, epidural steroid injections can significantly decrease inflammation associated with these pain-causing conditions
The space between the outside membrane covering the spinal cord (dura) and the inside of the bony spinal canal is the “epidural space,” and it runs the entire length of the spine. Medication injected into the epidural space moves freely up and down the spine to coat the nerve roots and the outside lining of the facet joints near the area of injection.
The relief from pain offered by epidural steroid injections can last from one week to one year, and these injections are particularly beneficial during episodes of severe back pain and typically enable patients to continue their rehabilitation.
