Dr. Timothy R. Kuklo is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and a former military physician at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he treated military personnel returning from the Middle East war. He retired from the U.S. Army Medical Corps with the rank of Colonel.
Dr. Kuklo is a specialist in adult and pediatric spine surgery, including spinal trauma and spine tumors. A fellowship-trained spine surgeon, Dr. Kuklo is extremely accomplished in utilizing a Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery approach to various spine problems when surgery is necessary.
Dr. Kuklo’s expertise in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery will significantly enhance the surgical treatment options SpineAustin offers to patients. SpineAustin expects Dr. Kuklo to join our medical staff early in 2010.
Dr. Kuklo has been listed in
America’s Top Doctors in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He was also listed in the 2007 first edition of the
Consumers’ Research Council of America’s Guide to America’s Top Orthopedists.
His research interests include spine biomechanics, spinal deformity, management of spine trauma, and radiographic process measures and digitization.
Prior to joining SpineAustin, Dr. Kuklo was Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Neurological Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2006, Dr. Kuklo received the Order of Military Medical Merit for exemplary contributions to the U.S. Medical Department.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Dr. Kuklo earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut in 1990, followed by a law degree in 1995 from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
He completed a transitional internship and a residency in orthopedic surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., followed by a fellowship in pediatric and adult spine surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. He then returned to Walter Reed as a staff member in orthopedic/spine surgery and as residency director of orthopedic surgery, where he attained the rank of Colonel, U.S. Army Medical Corps.
While serving at Walter Reed, he performed hundreds of surgical procedures, many involving complex spinal surgeries, for wounded U.S. soldiers.
Dr. Kuklo has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles, is a member of numerous professional societies and has received more than two dozen scientific recognitions since 1996.
He is married and the father of two children.
