Fellowship-trained Spine Surgeon

Dr. Jason Lowenstein is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and a fellowship-trained spine surgeon. Dr. Lowenstein specializes in the treatment of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine disorders, including disc herniations, cervical stenosis and myelopathy, scoliosis and spinal deformity.

Trained in all aspects of adult and pediatric spine surgery, Dr. Lowenstein approaches spine problems with a commitment to conservative care that relies on the most minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Lowenstein was the first spine surgeon in Central Texas to successfully implant an artificial disc in the neck of a patient using the FDA-approved Prestige cervical disc. The disc replacement surgery highlights the broad range of care Dr. Lowenstein brings to the SpineAustin team.

“SpineAustin is a comprehensive spine practice. We take care of all spine issues across the board, from routine neck and back pain to the most complex surgical cases,” he said.

Dr. Lowenstein was born in New York City and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania where he first became interested in spinal disorders as a result of his neurology research on spinal cord injury.

He received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh where he performed gene therapy research for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Dr. Lowenstein then performed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Columbia University Medical Center where he conducted research on spinal deformities, such as scoliosis and spondylolisthesis. He then completed a fellowship in Spine Surgery at the Emory University Spine Center.

In addition to authoring articles on spine conditions, Dr. Lowenstein is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a candidate member of the Scoliosis Research Society.
