Dr. Jason E. Lowenstein is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, specializing in the treatment of disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. Committed to a conservative approach to the treatment of spinal pathology, Dr. Lowenstein works with the SpineAustin team, as well as other care providers in the community, to offer a balanced treatment regimen for patients.

Dr. Lowenstein is trained in all aspects of adult and pediatric spine surgery. He specializes in the treatment of cervical stenosis and myelopathy, spinal deformities, and complex adult reconstructive surgery, and has authored several abstracts, book chapters, and peer reviewed journal articles on these subjects. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a candidate member of the Scoliosis Research Society.

Education and Training

A native of the Northeast, Dr. Lowenstein was born in New York City, and moved to Pittsburgh as a teenager. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied neuroscience and was honored as a Dean’s List Scholar. At Penn he enjoyed basic science research in neurology, studying spinal cord injury, which launched his interest in the management of spinal disease.

Education and Training (continued)

He received his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine, where he worked in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Growth and Development laboratory, performing gene therapy research for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Following medical school, Dr. Lowenstein performed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Columbia University Medical Center, where he conducted further research in the treatment of spinal deformities, such as scoliosis and spondylolisthesis. Dr. Lowenstein then completed a fellowship in Spine Surgery at the Emory Spine Center / Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA.
