Dr. Von Rueden is a board certified orthopedic surgeon, fellowship-trained in spine. Dr. Von Rueden has over 20 years of experience in the field of spine. He was Dr. Tom Lowe's first fellow in Denver and subsequently joined Dr. Lowe in 1987. The first 9 of his practice was involved with the training of spine fellows and residents in training at the University of Colorado and The Denver Children’s Hospital. In 1996, he relocated to Austin to join Dr. Tim Lowry and Dr. Laura Flawn at the Austin Orthopaedic Clinic. In 2002, he founded Texas Scoliosis and Spine. In 2004, merging with the top Physiatrists in the area formed Spine Austin where he has served as the president since its inception. Since completion of his training Dr. Von Rueden has earned the reputation of caring for the most complex spinal problems. He routinely receives referrals from other local and national spine surgeons. Dr. Von Rueden currently serves as a University of Texas spinal consultant and routinely manages and cares for a variety of student athletes at the University of Texas. He performs all aspects of spinal surgery in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions. His special interests include treating scoliosis and spinal deformities in both children and adults. He is also the Director of Spine at the trauma center at Brackenridge Hospital. Education and Training Dr. Von Rueden received a B.A. at the University of Minnesota in 1978 and a medical degree at the same institution in 1982. He completed an orthopedic internship and a residency program at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical College in Chicago, Illinois. He then received training in pediatric orthopedics at Denver Children’s Hospital. In 1994 and 1995, Dr. Von Rueden was awarded the North American Spine Study Traveling Fellowship. During that fellowship he studied and performed spinal surgery at several spine centers in the United States and Europe. He continues to take time off from his busy practice to visit the Worlds experts. In the field of Spine your training is never over.

Professional Involvement Dr. Von Rueden is an active fellow in the Scoliosis Research Society since 1997, the North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1989. He regularly attends other national meetings including The Cervical Spine Research Society and Spine Deformity Study Group. Personal In his free time he enjoys windsurfing, golf and snow skiing. He is married with two children Sarah and Max and two dogs Marlin and Kylie.
